About icy-passage

Building financial confidence in Birmingham's young people since 2018

Our Story

icy-passage began with a simple observation: too many young people reach adulthood without understanding basic financial concepts. Bank accounts feel intimidating. Budgeting seems like something only accountants do. The connection between daily choices and long-term outcomes remains invisible.

Founded in Birmingham in 2018, we set out to change this pattern. Our founders—educators and finance professionals—designed programmes that translate complex ideas into practical skills. No jargon. No condescension. Just clear, relevant learning that young people actually remember.

Six years later, we've worked with hundreds of families and partnered with schools across the West Midlands. The impact shows in small moments: a twelve-year-old negotiating pocket money. A teenager opening their first savings account with confidence. These victories matter.

What We Believe

Financial literacy isn't about becoming wealthy. It's about making informed choices. Understanding why a mobile contract differs from paying outright. Recognising marketing tactics. Knowing when to save and when spending makes sense.

We believe these skills should be universal, not privileges reserved for families who already have financial knowledge to pass down. Every child deserves the chance to build a healthy relationship with money—regardless of their background.

Our Teaching Philosophy

Young people learn best when content connects to their actual lives. Abstract percentages mean nothing. But understanding how interest affects the phone they want to buy? That resonates.

Our facilitators create space for questions, mistakes, and genuine exploration. There's no judgement about what participants don't know—only enthusiasm for helping them learn. We meet young people where they are and build from there.
